When I went to high school we had a JROTC program. Part of that program included a rifle team. Those on the rifle team shot .22 rifles in the school armory.
Starting in 1977, I was in JROTC for two years. We also had an indoor rifle range at the school.

In the years since, one thing I’ve learned to both appreciate and find humorous, Okay, the program was led by a retired military officer. In the U.S. Army, he most commonly dealt with officers one rank below him and one rank above. These were people who wanted to do a good job and were adults and professional. And then he’s suddenly dealing with a bunch of high school kids! :p

I think it was part of his commitment to our country, I mean the United States of America, in the post-Vietnam era.

Many students brought guns to school in the back window of their trucks. One student I knew brought a shotgun to his shop class for refurbishment. The problem isn’t guns. It’s a people problem. Kids are not receiving adequate raising. Too many families are being run by single parents. And I’ll go ahead and say this, people today do not live by Christian values.
Yeah, I used a bow and arrow in my junior high as part of my physical ed. class. Kids in the ROTC used weapons back then, but I wouldn't be comfortable with that today because of the seemingly high problem of mental health among children. It would've been relatively safe for our generation but it's too risky today. Kids are too crazy nowadays.

Why do you think that is? What, in your opinion, has changed in the last 40 some years?

Here is a general example. About 10 or more years ago, teachers were respected and even feared. Fast forward to today, kids walk all over teachers at least when it comes to public schools. If children have a hard time listening to teachers then I wouldn't want them around a firearm.

You brought up some good reasons in one of your previous post:

Totally agree! I'm also okay with kids being taught Christian values just as long as those values cause no harm.
